Travel insurance and war: are you insured or not?

More and more travelers are wondering about travel insurance war coverage. What happens if conflict breaks out at your destination? And can you cancel your trip free of charge? In this article we clearly explain what is and what is not insured.

Travel insurance war coverage: what exactly?

The world is changing rapidly. Conflict, geopolitical tensions and sudden travel restrictions are becoming more common. Consider situations where airspace is closed or flights are canceled.

This raises an important question:
How does travel insurance war coverage work in such situations?

The short answer: usually war is not covered.

Why war is often not covered by travel insurance

Virtually all travel and cancellation insurance policies have an important exclusion:
damage or expenses resulting from war or armed conflict are usually not covered.

Specifically, this means:

  • Canceling because of feeling unsafe is not a valid reason
  • Costs due to war, military conflict or airspace closure are not covered
  • Looking at solutions through the airline or travel agent first

Many travelers think that their insurance “covers everything,” but insurance is actually meant for personal, unforeseen situations, such as:

  • Disease
  • Accident
  • Death

Not for large-scale, global events.

What is insured?

Although war is often excluded, this does not mean that your insurance will do nothing.

Depending on your policy, the following may be covered:

✔ Medical expenses abroad
✔ Assistance and repatriation in case of illness or accident
✔ Additional costs due to delay (in some cases)

Please note that exact coverage always depends on your specific insurance and policy terms.

What does this mean for your journey?

Want to avoid surprises? Then preparation is essential.

Our advice:

  • Always check your policy conditions before departure
  • View current travel advice from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
  • Get your insurance on time (after the fact is often too late)
  • Book with parties that can flexibly rebook

Why good advice is essential

In practice, we see that many people don’t look at their insurance until something already goes wrong.

And that is precisely where the risk lies.

Good insurance:

  • Fits your travel habits
  • Takes into account risks
  • Is not necessarily the cheapest option

Important to remember:
Insurance does not prevent a crisis, but it can make a financial difference.
